As an Environmental Audit and Assurance Program Manager, you will develop and deliver a corporate-wide environmental assurance program to evaluate and report on the corporate wide and business unit performance, provide objective assurance to senior management and Council that The City is meeting its environmental and climate obligations, meet the internal audit requirements of ISO 14001 and manage external ISO 14001 registration services for business units. Primary duties include:
- Establish and steward the standards, procedures and tools used in the audit and assurance program; continually improve the effectiveness of the program through ongoing review of good practice and data.
- Engage and inform business units on corporate audit and assurance processes, progress and resource requirements.
- Develop and execute risk based multi-year plans of internal environmental audit and verification activities. Manage multi-functional, interdepartmental teams and consultants specific to the scope and criteria being evaluated.
- Provide training and coaching to internal assessors and evaluate their performance to ensure quality in assurance services provided to business units.
- Set requirements, analyze options and make selection decisions regarding external environmental and climate registration, certification, verification or audit services.
- Oversee consultants' performance related to contract deliverables.
- Report formally to senior leadership on system and compliance performance evaluated by the program; provide recommendations for corrective action and improvement.
Qualifications
- A degree in Environmental Science or related field.
- A least 5 years of relevant experience in areas such as environmental management system (EMS) frameworks; audit, verification and reporting processes; managing contracts and consultants; project/program management; and conducting environmental audits to ISO 14001 standards, internal organizational requirements and compliance obligations.
- ISO 14001 Lead Auditor certification (minimum 35-hour course with exam component) is required.
- EP(EMSLA) (Environmental Professional - Environmental Management Systems Lead Auditor) designation is an asset. Employees who are hired without this designation must achieve it within one year of hire.
- Proven abilities in critical thinking, research and analysis, strategic planning, collaboration and relationship-building, customer focus, data analysis, and risk assessment.
Working Conditions: Office environment with field visits to various sites requiring the use of personal protective equipment.
