As a Peace Officer with Transit Public Safety, you will serve as the primary provider of public safety, responsible for the safety and security of all Calgary Transit assets including employees, customers and property by providing a highly visible point of contact for customer information and reassurance by responding to illegal activity and disorder incidents on transit and transit property. Primary duties include:
- Provide customer service 24 hours a day to Calgary Transit employees, customers and citizens by responding to calls for service, conducting high visibility patrols based on intelligence-based analysis, and providing reassurance to customers.
- Enforce Municipal Bylaws and Provincial statutes, and designated Criminal Code offences to maintain public safety and disorder on the transit system.
- Respond to emergency situations and provide information and assistance to the public.
- Maintain the integrity of Calgary Transit's fare payment system.
- Prepare legal documents and give evidence in court.
- Collaborate with and exchange criminal and confidential information with the Calgary Police Service and other law enforcement agencies.
- Enhance community safety by patrolling all quadrants of the city via transit networks providing a presence on trains, buses and platforms.
- Foster geographical ownership within assigned districts to build strong relationships with transit riders, residents, businesses and community partners.
- Improve customer experiences and perception of safety on and around the transit system through integrated response, proactive officer-generated interactions, and effective call response.
- Educate and inform the public and City of Calgary employees about the safety and security of Calgary Transit.
- Support safety and security on the transit system through collaboration with internal and external partners, including Emergency Management & Community Safety, Calgary Police Service, Alberta Health Services, and other community organizations.
Qualifications
- A High School diploma or equivalency (e.g. GED or CAEC [Canadian Adult Education Certificate]), with course related work and at least 5 years of related experience; OR a 1 year certificate with at least 3 years of experience; OR a 2 year diploma with at least 1 year of experience.
- A valid Class 5 Driver's Licence (or provincial equivalent), with no more than 6 demerits and no current suspensions or charges pending.
- Eligible to hold the appointments of a Community Peace Officer Level 1 and Bylaw Enforcement Officer.
- Training and/or certifications in conflict resolution, mediation or negotiation will be an asset.
- Experience or training working with the unhoused and vulnerable population is considered an asset.
- Demonstrated ability to mediate conflict situations with the public, the ability to build strong partnerships and trust within the community, and the ability to follow clearly defined policies and procedures.
Pre-employment Requirements
- Applicants must not have a criminal conviction for which a pardon has not been granted.
- An enhanced security clearance will be conducted.
- Must obtain a City of Calgary operator's permit.
- Applicants will complete a written communication proficiency test.
- Successful applicants must provide proof of qualifications.
- Applicants must meet the provincial standard on the Physical Abilities Requirement Evaluation (PARE), Correctional Officer Physical Aptitude test (COPAT), Police Officer Physical Aptitude Test (POPAT) or Alberta Physical Readiness Evaluation for Police (APREP) physical fitness test prior to consideration.
Note: Successful applicants will be required to complete a comprehensive training program to hold a Community Peace Officer (Level 1) appointment.
